What is safeguarding?

Safeguarding is defined by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as:

‘ …protecting a person’s health, wellbeing, and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect’

Who is at risk?

All patients are potentially at risk of safeguarding issues, but some groups of patients are particularly vulnerable to harm and exploitation.

  • Vulnerable groups include but are not limited to:
  • Vulnerable adults and children (where being vulnerable is defined as in need of special care, support, or protection because of age, disability, risk of abuse or neglect)
  • Those with learning disabilities and cognitive impairment, including those with dementia
  • Those with disabilities that rely on others to access their record
  • Those living away from home
  • Asylum seekers
  • Children in contact with the youth justice system
  • Victims of domestic abuse
  • Those who may be singled out due to their religion, ethnicity, gender identity or sexual orientation
  • Those who may be exposed to violent extremism
  • Those with serious mental health conditions

At Profile we believe that anyone can become vulnerable, either temporarily or permanently at any point in their life, due to either internal pressures or external circumstances. Life throws us all curve balls at different stages, from issues with housing, finances, extended absence from work or other personal / sensitive problems or experiences.

We want you to feel safe and supported whilst you are studying with Profile and your Tutor will check in with you about your general wellbeing each time you meet. As well as supporting your progress with your studies they can help and advise you as and when other factors may impact your work and learning. When appropriate they can refer your situation to our safeguarding team for further assistance and advice.

By disclosing any issues you are dealing with at work / home, the Profile Team will have the opportunity to make reasonable adjustments and/or put support in place or signpost you to experienced organisations or services that will be able to help you more comprehensively.

You can disclose any safeguarding issues you may have with your Tutor directly, or if you wish to do this anonymously you can email our Safeguarding Team via safeguarding@profiledt.co.uk.

All employers will have safeguarding provision in place to support their employees. Your Line Manager or Designated Safeguarding Lead will be able to tell you more about the support and provision your employer can provide. In some cases, it will be pertinent for both your employer and training provider to be aware of the safeguarding issue you are dealing with. In such circumstances all parties will work together to ensure the best outcome for our learner/employee, and we will always be sensitive of the circumstances and shared confidential information.
